The Writing Retreat takes place in Abruzzo, a region of Italy that offers solitude, inspiration and renewal, located ninety miles east of Rome, in the ancient 12th century hill town of Santo Stefano di Sessanio.

The program is limited to a small group of six to ten writers who meet each morning for five days in sessions devoted to instruction and workshop with a focus on creative, narrative nonfiction. Participants come with works in progress or begin anew based on inspiration during the workshop. The experience is beneficial to both seasoned and emerging writers. Instruction is supplemented with individual conferences throughout the week.

Optional afternoon excursions explore ancient Abruzzese traditions still practiced in town and the countryside--for example, cheese-making, weaving, and pasta-making typical of the region.

Please peruse our website for many photos, more information about the hotel, and endorsements of past participants.

Enrollment includes all instruction, instructional materials, six night's stay in the boutique hotel, Sextantio Albergo Diffuso, full daily breakfast, all evening meals with wine, afternoon excursions and lectures, and van transport from Rome and return.

Italy, In Other Words Writing Workshop

Italy, in Other Words Writing Retreat will be held June 15--21, 2014 in the Abruzzo region of Italy. We stay in a boutique hotel in a medieval hill town, Santo Stefano di Sessanio. Each summer a thoughtful writing community forms as we meet mornings to study the craft of narrative nonfiction and workshop participants writing. Afternoons offer optional activities that focus on the culture of Abruzzo. We enjoy Abruzzese cuisine and wines in the hotel's candlelit dining room or in local family-run restaurants. Visit our website to find many photos of past workshops, endorsements and enrollment and contact information.
