The Best of The AWP Pedagogy Papers 2007

Deadline

Papers must have been received via e-mail as a Word attachment no later than October 15, 2008. Notifications of acceptance will be sent by November 15, 2009. In order to ensure the highest quality and variety of papers in the collection, as well as to ensure that the one-page limit is strictly adhered to, accepted authors may be asked to revise or edit their papers. Approximately 200 papers will be selected by the members of the Pedagogy Team No more than 20 papers will be selected for The Best of AWP The Pedagogy Papers 2009.


Submission Guidelines

Submitting work to The AWP Pedagogy Papers 2009 represents an application to present at a session of the Pedagogy Forum. As with other AWP panels, readings, and roundtables, authors of accepted papers will be assigned a session time to share their ideas.

Topics should explore, but are not limited to, innovations in creative writing theory, exercises, research, and diagnostics. All contributors to The AWP Pedagogy Papers 2009 will present and discuss their papers in small groups during one of the Pedagogy Forum sessions at the conference.

A collection of 20 selected papers, The Best of The AWP Pedagogy Papers 2009, will be made available to members online after the conference. The AWP Board has named Mary Biddinger, Catherine Carson, Gary Leising, and Joshua Weber, with Patricia Horvath and T. Stores advising, as the team responsible for coordinating and editing this year's Pedagogy Forum and Papers.  The guidelines for The AWP Pedagogy Papers 2009 are offered below. More information about the structure and schedule of the Pedagogy Forum will be available in the fall.

Note: Because of the volume of submissions the following guidelines must be adhered to precisely or the submission will be returned.


Submission

Send papers electronically to: pedagogy@awpwriter.org. Please use your LAST NAME, FIRST NAME as your SUBJECT HEADING (e.g. Larkin, Philip) for more efficient processing. Receipt of your pedagogy paper will be acknowledged electronically. No multiple submissions, please. Individuals already participating in a general conference event, such as a panel, roundtable, caucus or reading, are not eligible to submit a pedagogy paper.


Format

In the e-mail message to which the Word document is attached, the Author's postal address and phone number MUST be included. The paper must not exceed one single-spaced page with one-inch margins, and must be typed in 12-point Times font. In a single line at the top of your paper (within the margins) include your name, your institutional affiliation, your email (optional), the appropriate level (see below) and the genre (see below). Your title should be centered below this information.


Content

Topics must address the teaching of creative writing and may cover the application of pedagogical theory, specific course development, classroom activities, assignments, texts, or other aspects of teaching. Papers must be designated by one of the following genres: Drama, Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, or Multi-Genre. We are especially interested in receiving more papers that focus on drama. You may contact the coordinators if you feel your paper doesn't fall under one of these categories. Papers must also be designated by level as Undergraduate, Graduate, Any Level, or Alternative (elementary/secondary school, writing in community settings, etc.).

The use of the first person should be limited to situations where it is necessitated by the paper’s subject and integral to its pedagogical focus.

Because of the volume of submissions, papers must be publication ready. The pedagogy team retains the right to edit for length or clarity or to return the paper to the author for editing. Titles must be restricted to one line and should encapsulate the paper's topic. It is the responsibility of the author to adhere to Federal Copyright guidelines and to acknowledge sources appropriately. Citations should be made in-text; no footnotes or works cited pages.

Before writing your paper, we recommend that you read the sample papers available above. You will note that in sample papers, the purposes and outcomes of exercises are contextualized and not merely reproduced as a step-by-step presentation. Also note that most contributors suggest authors and texts that speak to their paper’s topic.


Presentation

Authors selected for The AWP Pedagogy Papers 2008 should also plan on discussing their paper in a group format during the Pedagogy Forum. Authors will receive a time assignment once the schedule has been established. You must register at the student, member, or non-member rate to attend. An opportunity to volunteer on-site at the conference in exchange for a complimentary conference pass will be made available in January 2009.


Facilitators

Breakout session facilitators will be selected from among Pedagogy Paper authors. Facilitators attend a brief training meeting and one forum session.
