Get Lit on Campus: Developing Lit Mags in the Community College Classroom

This panel explores different approaches to producing a community college literary magazine inside the classroom. Topics of discussion include issues related to staff recruitment, pedagogy, editing, layout, funding and costs, advertising, submissions, course credit, online versus print publishing, and technological tools. The panelists reflect on obstacles—some common, some unique, some related specifically to the pandemic—as well as creative solutions.

Elissa Minor teaches English at Portland Community College where she is the faculty advisor for The Bellwether Review and helps coordinate the Carolyn Moore Writers House. She publishes both creative nonfiction and fiction; her book, The Prisoner Pear, was a New York Times editors pick.

Megan Savage is a widely published multigenre writer and Instructor at Portland Community College, where she teaches editing and publishing and co-coordinates the Carolyn Moore Writing Residency. She holds an MFA in fiction from Indiana University where she was fiction editor of Indiana Review.

Tobin F. Terry teaches English and journalism and is department co-chair and president of the faculty union at Lakeland Community College. Tobin is an editor for Chagrin River Review and was named communications director emeritus for the Antioch Writers' Workshop. He earned an MFA from the NEOMFA.

James B. De Monte teaches English and directs international education at Lakeland Community College. He received an MFA from the NEOMFA and a PhD from the University of Toledo. His books include Where Are Your People From? (Cornerstone Press, 2023) and Brotherhood (Blue Cubicle Press, 2015).
