AWP Awards Celebration

The annual AWP Awards Celebration will celebrate AWP’s good works at a waterfront location with mojitos, hors d’oeuvres, and cigars*, and feature esteemed writer Joy Harjo and a special musical performance by the Latin band, Orquesta Infinidad. The event will honor the newly awarded recipients of the George Garrett Award for Outstanding Community Service in Literature and the Small Press Publisher Award

*The venue has a separate indoor and outdoor patio space. Cigars are only permitted on the large patio space.

AWP supports writers throughout their educations and careers, from high school through graduate work and post-graduate mentoring, from teaching assistants to full professors. Proceeds from the Awards Celebration will support AWP's Writer to Writer Mentorship Program, which matches emerging writers and published authors for a three-month series on the writing life. While the program is open to all AWP members, applications are particularly encouraged from writers who have never been associated with an MFA program and those writing from regions, backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives too often underrepresented in the literary world.

Joy Harjo Joy Harjo has published eight books of poetry, including Conflict Resolution for Holy Beings, How We Became Human, and She Had Some Horses. Harjo’s memoir Crazy Brave won both the PEN USA Literary Award for Creative Nonfiction and an American Book Award in 2013. Other honors include the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Native Writers Circle of the Americas, the Wallace Stevens Award from the Academy of American Poets, and the William Carlos Williams Award from the Poetry Society of America. Harjo is Professor of English and American Indian studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. She lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
