S278. Calling White Allies: What White Writers Can Do to Foster Inclusion and Support People of Color

Participants from three major genres at various stages in their careers offer their experience and advice regarding what white writers can do to become (and continue being) more effective and sensitive allies to writers of color and people of color in general. Following this discussion, the panelists will hold a dialogue with the attendees, entertaining questions and further suggestions from audience members on possibilities for improving this crucial work.

Alexis Paige’s work has appeared in Fourth Genre, the Rumpus, Pithead Chapel, and Brevity, where she is an assistant editor. Winner of the New Millennium Writings Nonfiction Prize, she was twice a finalist in Glamour's essay contest, and once nominated for a Pushcart. Paige has an MFA from USM.

Katie Bickham earned her MFA from Stonecoast at the University of Southern Maine. Her first book of poetry, The Belle Mar, was the recipient of the Lena-Miles Wever Todd Prize. Katie teaches creative writing and poetry at Bossier Parish Community College.

Alexs Pate is the author of five novels including the New York Times bestseller Amistad: The Novel, a book of poems, and a literary criticism of contemporary rap lyrics. He currently teaches in the Stonecoast MFA in creative writing program and is the president of Innocent Technologies, LLC.

Tim Seibles is the author of several collections of poetry, including Hammerlock, Buffalo Head Solos, and most recently, Fast Animal, which was nominated for a National Book Award in 2012. He is a professor of English at Old Dominion University and visiting faculty for the Stonecoast MFA program.
