When Higginson eviscerated Dickinson’s poems, she responded by thanking him for the surgery, and noting that it was not so painful as she’d supposed. However, many creative writing instructors feel they must avoid offering rigorous criticism, or risk gaining a reputation for sadism. But does pain serve a purpose in the revision process? In this panel, writers with diverging teaching philosophies will discuss what the writing workshop stands to gain—or lose—from stinging appraisals.

Moderator:

Megan Levad is the author of Why We Live in the Dark Ages, forthcoming; she is also the lyricist for composer Kristin Kuster. She runs the Zell Visiting Writers Series at the University of Michigan, and she teaches a creative writing class based on visiting writers' work.

Peter Ho Davies is the author of the novel The Welsh Girl, and the story collections The Ugliest House in the World and Equal Love. His work has appeared in Harper's, the Atlantic, Granta, and the Paris Review, and been selected for Prize Stories: The O. Henry Award and Best American Short Stories.

Pimone Triplett's most recent collection of poetry is entitled Rumor. Her other books of poetry are The Price of Light and Ruining the Picture. She is an associate professor of creative writing at the University of Washington in Seattle.

V.V. Ganeshananthan's debut novel, Love Marriage, was longlisted for the Orange Prize and named one of Washington Post Book World's "Best Books of 2008." Her work has appeared in Granta and The New York Times, among others. In the fall of 2015, she will join the MFA faculty at the University of Minnesota.

Jeffrey Schultz’s first book, What Ridiculous Things We Could Ask of Each Other, was selected by Kevin Young for the 2013 National Poetry Series and is forthcoming from the University of Georgia Press. His poems have been published widely and he teaches creative writing at Pepperdine University.
