Studying Creative Writing in the UK

Over forty UK universities offer postgraduate courses in creative writing, though many prospective students from North America are unaware of these opportunities. This panel of writers, trained in both the UK and the USA, will discuss the degrees available at UK universities and the difference between American and British writing programs, drawing upon experience gained at institutions including St Andrews, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Cambridge, and the University of Manchester.

Moderator:

Lucy Durneen is a writer, editor, and teacher, and directs the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching Creative Writing at the University of Cambridge. Her short story collection Wild Gestures, (MidnightSun) won Best Short Story Collection at the Saboteur Awards in London (2017).

Alycia Pirmohamed is a Canadian-born poet based in Scotland and the author of Another Way to Split Water (YesYes Books). She received an MFA from the University of Oregon, a PhD from the University of Edinburgh, and she currently teaches in the MSt. creative writing program at the University of Cambridge.

Joe Mungo Reed is the author of the novels Hammer and We Begin Our Ascent. He holds an MFA in creative writing from Syracuse University, and a PhD in Creative Writing from the University of Manchester. He teaches in the ICE Creative Writing MSt at the University of Cambridge.

Patrick James Errington is a multi-award-winning poet, translator, editor, and academic. Patrick received a BA from the University of Alberta, an MFA from Columbia, and a PhD from the University of St Andrews, and has taught writing and literature at the University of Edinburgh, Dundee, St Andrews, and Napier in Scotland.
