R236. Where Are All the Female Editors? The Imbalance of Female Editors in the Publishing Industry

Articles are regularly published reporting the imbalance of female editors to male editors on journal mastheads. Female editors of color are represented even less. Is there really a gender and racial bias in the publishing industry? In this panel, female editors from diverse backgrounds discuss the struggles, triumphs, and challenges of working in the literary world.

Moderator:

Lisa Kastner is a former correspondent and editor, and her short stories have appeared in magazines and journals. Founder of Running Wild Writers, she is the former president of Pennwriters, Inc.

M.J. Fievre is the author of A Sky the Color of Chaos, a memoir set in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The founding editor of Sliver of Stone magazine, she is also a program coordinator for the Miami Book Fair (ReadCaribbean program). She blogs at The Whimsical Project.

Rebecca Dimyan has an MFA in creative writing from Fairfield University. She is a writer, professor, and food journalist whose works have appeared in various print and online publications, including 34th Parallel, The Ampersand Review, HelloGiggles, Vox, and xoJane.

Jennifer Maritza McCauley is a PhD candidate at University of Missouri and holds editorial positions at The Missouri Review, Origins, and Fjords. She has received fellowships from CantoMundo, SAFTA and the Knight Foundation and is the author of the poetry collection SCARON/SCAROFF.
