Every writer has felt that panic when facing the page. The desire to write burns within and yet nothing comes out. How do we keep ourselves from getting blocked? How do we develop a healthy, happy relationship with our writing? What does a day in the life of a working writer look like? How do we carve out the time and mental space to be creative? These diverse writers who have successfully overcome writer’s block share their techniques and offer advice, support, and caution.

Moderator:

Jean Kwok is The New York Times and international bestselling author of the award-winning novels Girl in Translation and Mambo in Chinatown. Her work has been published in 18 countries and is taught in schools across the world. She has spoken at Harvard, Columbia, and many other schools and venues.

Mira Jacob is the author of the novel, The Sleepwalker’s Guide to Dancing, which was shortlisted for India’s Tata First Literature Award, honored by the APALA, and named one of the best books of 2014 by Kirkus Reviews, The Boston Globe, Goodreads, Bustle, and The Millions.

Juan Martinez is an assistant professor at Northwestern University. Best Worst American, his story collection, was released in 2017, and his work has appeared in Huizache, Glimmer Train, McSweeney's, Ecotone, Selected Shorts, and elsewhere.

Elizabeth L. Silver is the author of the memoir, The Tincture of Time, and the novel, The Execution of Noa P. Singleton, which was an Amazon Best Book of the Year and published in seven languages. She has been featured on PBS, written for McSweeney's, New York magazine, The Washington Post, Lenny, and more.

Sari Wilson is author of the acclaimed novel Girl Through Glass. Her fiction has appeared in Slice, AGNI, and has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. She is the recipient of a Wallace Stegner Fellowship, a Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center Fellowship, and a residency from Yaddo.
