Ron Wallace, 2005 George Garrett Award Recipient

The author of many books of poetry, fiction, and criticism, Ron Wallace established the undergraduate program in creative writing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and he recently established the university’s graduate program, which provides financial support for all accepted students. As an editor, Wallace also launched two poetry prizes at the University of Wisconsin Press: the Brittingham and Feliz Pollak Prizes. He also helped to establish the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing, which provides postgraduate fellowships for writers.

“For his building of new programs and publishing venues for writers, for his great work as a teacher, program director, and editor,” said Executive Director David Fenza, “AWP is delighted to recognize Ron Wallace for his exceptional generosity and effectiveness in supporting the next generation of emerging talents.”
