City Lights to Publish First Children’s Book

March 19, 2015

City Lights, a sixty-year old independent bookstore and publisher in San Francisco notable for its publishing Allen Ginsberg’s Howl and Other Poems in 1956, is publishing its first children’s book.

The book, called Rad American Women A-Z: Rebels, Trailblazers, and Visionaries Who Shaped Our History...and Our Future! and written by Kate Schatz and illustrated by Miriam Klein Stahl, celebrates twenty-six women, including punk rock musician Patti Smith. Schatz, who was initially inspired to write the book for her young daughter, said to Publisher’s Weekly:

“We have a house full of children’s books, and there were so many A-Z books, but I wanted something more dynamic, diverse and engaging. I realized I would need to do that myself. At first I thought it would just be a fun side project, but people reacted so passionately. I realized all kinds of people were hoping for and wanting something like this book.”

City Lights vice president Stacey Lewis said of the book, “...this one was just so City Lights... We are very excited to be doing this book.”

City Lights/Sister Spit will publish Rad American Women on April 7, 2015.
