Whiting Foundation Announces its Ten Whiting Award Winners

March 19, 2015

The Whiting Foundation has announced its Whiting Award winners, which are given annually to ten emerging writers in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama.

The winners in fiction include Leopoldine Core, Dan Josefson, and Azareen Van der Vliet Oloomi; in nonfiction: Elena Passarello; in poetry: Anthony Carelli, Aracelis Girmay, Jenny Johnson, and Roger Reeves; and in drama: Lucas Hnath and Anne Washburn. Each winner received $50,000 as part of the award.

The Foundation’s selections are based on “early accomplishment and the promise of great work to come,” as well as the nominations of writers, professors, editors, agents, critics, booksellers, artistic directors of theaters, dramturgs, and directors of literary festivals or reading series from across the country.

The winners formally accepted their awards at a ceremony in New York last week. Read excerpts of the winners’ work on the Foundation’s website.
