AWP, Writer’s Chronicle On List of Top Advocates for Poetry
August 15, 2013
The Huffington Post recently featured a list of the top 200 “most ardent” advocates for American poetry, which included the Association of Writers and Writing Programs and the Writer’s Chronicle. The list, put together by Seth Abramson, poet, critic, and blogger for Huffington Post, featured many of America’s stand-out poets (including Presidential inaugural poets Richard Blanco and Elizabeth Alexander), celebrity advocates (such as singer Fiona Apple, comedian Stephen Colbert, and actor/director James Franco), reading series organizers, bookstore owners, current and former US Poet Laureates, activists, editors, critics, as well as representatives of national arts advocacy organizations (the NEA, CLMP, Academy of American Poets, VIDA, Cave Canem, and Kundiman). Any idiosyncratic inclusions aside, the list does seem to indicate a vast and vibrant poetry culture in America. And, at 200, the list seems hardly exhaustive.
