Staff Picks: 10 Native American Male Writers You Should Be Reading Now

November 26, 2018

Staff Picks

November is Native American Heritage Month, a month to celebrate the rich culture, traditions, and histories of Native people, as well as their unique and lasting contributions to our world. According to the National Congress of American Indians, “Heritage Month is also an opportune time to educate the general public about tribes, to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.”

Earlier this month, AWP shared a list of ten Indigenous women writers whose contributions to literary culture we wanted to honor. Now, here are ten Indigenous men writers whose contributions to literary culture have been great. The contributions of all Indigenous writers are, of course, invaluable, but these are some of our favorites. Please join us in celebrating Native American Heritage Month by checking out these incredible writers if you haven’t already, and share your favorite lines and passages with us on social media.
