Dear Evan Hansen, the monumentally successful, Tony-award winning musical, will be published on October 9, 2018 by Little, Brown as a young adult novel titled Dear Evan Hansen: The Novel. The show’s writers Steven Levenson, Benj Pasek, and Justin Paul will work with author Val Emmich to adapt the play.

“For us, the most powerful and gratifying part of the journey of making this musical has been seeing the ways in which audiences have connected with these characters and their stories,” said Levenson, Pasek, and Paul in a joint statement. “We are thrilled that this novel will be able to bring Dear Evan Hansen to even more people, and we hope that it will continue to spark conversation.”

Winner of six 2017 Tony Awards, Dear Evan Hansen is a look into the loneliness and grief of high school student Evan Hansen. The show was received with a rush of popular enthusiasm as well, grossing nearly $100 million since its opening.

According to a story from The New York Times, when initially asked to work on the adaptation, Emmich refused. “I realized how big of a phenomenon it was, and that scared me off,” he said. “Oh man, this is so beloved, I can only screw this up.” After further discussions with the original writers of the show, Emmich eventually accepted the offer. “I really connected with Evan’s tortured interior life,” he said.
