April 18, 2016

Juan Felipe HerreraJuan Felipe Herrera will serve a second yearlong term as the U.S. Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry according to an announcement from the Library of Congress. (The appointment involves giving an annual lecture and reading, but otherwise poets laureate are free to use the position as they see fit.)

During his first year, Herrera, who is the first Hispanic poet to serve in the position, created “La Casa de Colores,” an online project that features two parts: “La Familia,” which invites members of the public to contribute lines to a collective epic poem, and “El Jardin,” which includes Herrera’s “poem responses” to library materials, including work by Pablo Neruda, the folksinger Woody Guthrie, and more.

On Wednesday night, Herrera read from his work and celebrated the conclusion of his laureateship at a closing event hosted by the Library of Congress and co-sponsored by the Library of Congress Hispanic Division.

“It’s great to have Juan Felipe Herrera join the illustrious ranks of poet laureates who were so dedicated to public outreach for poetry that they chose to serve a second term,” said AWP Executive Director David Fenza. “He joins Rita Dove, Billy Collins, Robert Pinsky, Kay Ryan, Ted Kooser, and Natasha Trethewey as one the few, the proud, and the brave to tie themselves to the wheel of the USS Poetry.”

Details about Herrera’s new projects for the second term will be announced over the summer, reports The New York Times.
