Statistics for the AWP Award Series 2011–2015

August 20, 2015

Since the inception of the AWP Award Series in 1975, this competition has helped to launch the careers of many of its winners.

Several of the award-winning books have received international recognition, and they have been translated into many languages.

Unfortunately, this year, the judge for the Creative Nonfiction category did not pick a winner. We are disappointed, but the Award Series guidelines state that the judge reserves the right to not pick a winner, and we stand by that.

All the entrants in the 2015 Nonfiction category who did not withdraw their manuscripts before the judge decided will be offered a waiver to reenter the Nonfiction Prize competition in 2016. We sincerely hope that everyone will avail of this offer.

In an effort to explain how the budget for the Award Series works, we have included a table with statistics for the previous five years.

* In 2013, the AWP Award Series shifted to Submittable. The entry fees here are the totals after Submittable deducts their fees for each manuscript entered.

** The awards amount for 2015 reflects the nonpayment of the Creative Nonfiction prize. This amount will be carried forward to 2016 to pay for waivers for the 2015 entrants in this category to reenter the Nonfiction prize in 2016.

*** These figures are based on hours employees spent administering the Award Series.

**** The figures in red are negative numbers.
