Netflix, which has secured the rights to Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, will adapt the series of thirteen books into a live-action series, according to Deadline.

“[The] search is underway for a director to help re-create Snicket’s visual world on TV,” reported Deadline. “Netflix is producing the project, which is being fast-tracked, with Paramount Television. Paramount was behind the 2004 movie [of the same name] starring Jim Carrey, which grossed $209 million worldwide.”

A Series of Unfortunate Events follows the lives of orphan siblings, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire as they battle their guardian, uncle Olaf, who mistreats them, and pursues their inheritance.

“On the search for fantastical material that appeals to both parents and kids, the first stop for a generation of readers is A Series of Unfortunate Events,” said Cindy Holland, vice president of original content at Netflix, according to Deadline.

Daniel Handler, who is the author behind the Lemony Snicket pseudonym-illusion, confirmed via his Twitter account that Netflix will adapt the series, to the excitement of his Twitter followers.

“I can’t believe it,” Snicket/Handler said, from an undisclosed location. “After years of providing top-quality entertainment on demand, Netflix is risking its reputation and its success by associating itself with my dismaying and upsetting books.”
