NaNoWriMo Is Underway

November 5, 2014

It’s National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) again, which means that, for the entire month of November, thousands of aspiring and established writers everywhere are trying to work up a new novel totaling 50,000 words (which amounts to over 1,600 words per day).

Writing communities have all sorts of ways to help keep you on track, too, such as forums on the NaNoWriMo website, in addition to its Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, and Pinterest accounts. Writers can find pep talks on the writing process from established novelists, including, this year, Jim Butcher, author of The Dresden Files; Kami Garcia, co-author of the Beautiful Creatures series; and Tamora Pierce, author of the Song of the Lioness. And participants can collect discounts on software, books, and self-publishing services for their participation.

According to Boston Globe writer Maura Johnston, about 100 published novels have originated from NaNoWriMo, including Sarah Gruen’s bestseller Water for Elephants (2006) and Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus (2011).

Interested? Check out NaNoWriMo’s preparatory resources, which include articles such as “How to Schedule Time for Writing” and “How to Create 3-Dimensional Conflict,” or sign up in your region. And, if you’re a poet, don’t forget to pencil in your plans for National Poetry Writing Month (NaPoWriMo) in April.
