October 23, 2014

Toni MorrisonAccording to The New York Times, the works of Toni Morrison will be permanently archived at Princeton University. Christopher L. Eisgruber, Princeton’s president, announced the news last Friday at a conference for black alumni, where Morrison was in attendance. The Nobel Laureate, 83, was a university faculty member at Princeton from 1989 to 2006, when she retired.

“This extraordinary resource will provide scholars and students with unprecedented insights into Professor Morrison’s remarkable life and her magnificent, influential literary works,” Eisgruber said in a statement.

The collection includes more than 180 linear feet of documents, including earlier versions of Morrison’s novels, such as Song of Solomon (1977) and the Pulitzer Prize winner Beloved (1987). More will be added over time, including the manuscript of Morrison’s upcoming novel, due out in the spring.

Parts of the collection are available to view through Monday, November 24, 2014 at Princeton’s Firestone Library; over the next year or so, archivists will work on making the full collection available for research.
