Author's Work Faces Ban in South Carolina

September 21, 2011

Bret Lott’s young adult novel, The Hunt Club, is facing opposition from the Charleston County School District in South Carolina.

According to Lott, parents of Wando High School students objected last year to The Hunt Club’s use of profanity, violence, racial slurs, and reference to drug use. After the high school opted to keep the book on its reading list, some parents appealed to the school district. The Board of Trustees will hold a hearing on September 28 regarding the book’s banning. It is the second time in the school district’s history that a book has been challenged before the Board.

When asked for his thoughts on the hearing, Mr. Lott said, “The book has been on {the Wando High School} reading list for years…To find suddenly some sort of simmering rage raised because, to the best of my ability, I’ve tried to reflect the reality of evil is, well, shocking. It’s a reminder that there are people out there who, in their ignorance, see in the words on a page only words on a page.”
