Baltimore’s Edgar Allan Poe House May See New Life
October 10, 2012
On September 28, after thirty-three years in operation, the Edgar Allan Poe House in west Baltimore was closed. Less than one week later, the Baltimore Sun reported that the city of Baltimore agreed to pay $180,000 to the B&O Railroad Museum in order to develop plans to make the Poe House into a self-sufficient tourist attraction.
In the past, the House received $85,000 from the city. Plans include efforts to increase attendance, which had been between 3,000 and 5,000 annual guests, to develop an annual operations budget between $200,000 and $300,000, and to establish the House as a more of an eminent Baltimore tourist attraction.
Over the next year, B&O Museum personnel will work in conjunction with members of a newly formed nonprofit organization, Poe Baltimore, to develop an improved website, new logo, promotional materials and videos, and more. A reopening is planned for Spring 2013.
