Betsy Amster is president of Betsy Amster Literary Enterprises, a literary agency in Portland and Los Angeles. Before opening her agency in 1992, she spent ten years as an editor at Pantheon and Vintage, two divisions of Random House. She has been described in the Los Angeles Times as “a dogged prospector of…literary talent” and celebrated in a profile in the American Society of Journalists and Authors newsletter for her “no-nonsense style and whimsical sense of humor.” She teaches classes at UCLA Extension’s Writers Program, guest-speaks in Portland State’s Publishing Program and appears every year at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books.
Betsy has worked with such authors as New York Times bestseller Wendy Mogel, author of THE BLESSING OF A SKINNED KNEE; LA Times-bestselling novelists María Amparo Escandón and Joy Nicholson; MacArthur fellow and urban farmer Will Allen; James Beard Award winner Kim Boyce; research psychologist Elaine Aron; and Mary Higgins Clark Award Winner Sandi Ault.
Her agency’s areas of interest include literary fiction, voice-driven mysteries and thrillers, narrative nonfiction (especially by journalists), travelogues, memoirs (including graphic memoirs), social issues, psychology, research-based self-help, popular culture, and quirky gift books.
