His 22 books include Wintergreen (John Burroughs Medal), Where Bigfoot Walks (Guggenheim Fellowship), Sky Time in Gray's River (National Outdoor Book Award), Chinook & Chanterelle and Evolution of the Genus Iris (poems), and Magdalena Mountain (novel).
