Cary Holladay is the author of seven volumes of fiction, most recently Horse People: Stories  (LSU Press 2013), The Deer in the Mirror (Ohio State UP 2013, winner of the OSU Prize in Short Fiction), and A Fight in the Doctor's Office (Miami U of Ohio Press 2008, winner of the Miami U of Ohio Novella Award). 

Her awards include an O. Henry Prize and fellowships from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the Tennessee Arts Commission, and the NEA. 

History and folklore are major sources for her fiction. A native of Virginia, she and her husband, the writer John Bensko, teach at the University of Memphis.
