Loghaven Artist Residency hosts emerging and established artists working in the fields of writing, visual art, music composition, dance, theater, architecture, and interdisciplinary work, for two to six-week residencies. Our goal is to provide artists with the highest level of support both during and after their time in residence.

Loghaven’s historic cabins and ninety acres of surrounding woodlands have been thoughtfully preserved and renovated. The original log cabins on the property were built in the 1930s by Myssie Thompson. As a single mother, Myssie developed the cabins as a rental homes to support her family during the depression. These historic cabins will be used as artists’ living spaces during their time in residence. Many of the cabins are ample in size, allowing for both live and work spaces and making them ideal for hosting collaborative artist groups. In addition to the cabins, there are three newly constructed buildings on the campus. The McDonough House offers a communal gathering place for residents and houses a multi-disciplinary studio. Two additional studios, one for performing arts and one for visual arts, are cantilevered over the hillside and incorporate eight-foot tall windows looking out on the forested hillside below.

For over eighty years, this cabin community has been home to creatives, intellectuals, and entrepreneurs seeking inspiration in a beautiful setting. Loghaven Artist Residency continues and expands upon the tradition of creativity on this wooded ridgetop just ten minutes from downtown Knoxville.

Loghaven’s annual open call for applications takes place on June 1 through July 15, for residencies occurring the following year. Practicing artists of all backgrounds and at any stage of their career are eligible to apply for a Loghaven residency. The chief criteria for selection are artistic excellence and creative potential. International artists and artists currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program are not eligible. Artists must be at least twenty-one years old and live more than 120 miles away from Knoxville, TN. This distance requirement is designed to ensure that artists are able to be fully immersed in their residency experience and able to take advantage of the retreat-style environment.
