Residential programMA candidates in literature may take an area of concentration in creative writing, and may submit a portfolio of fiction or poetry for the thesis. Candidates for the PhD in English with a concentration in creative writing must complete a dissertation in the form of a collection of poems, a novel, a creative nonfiction manuscript, or a group of short stories. Graduate course offerings include seminars in the technique of poetry and fiction, as well as workshops in both genres and creative nonfiction.
The English Department houses the editorial offices of Prairie Schooner, a nationally known literary magazine, which celebrated its 75th Anniversary in 2001. One or two MA students per year generally work as R.A.s for PS. Students may also do for-credit internships with the journal.
