Residential program

The Department of Languages and Literature has a Writing Program heavily supported by the university's Center of Excellence in the Creative Arts. Visiting writers are frequently in residence. (Past writers-in-residence: Howard Norman, John Daniel, Patsy Sims, Al Young, Cris Mazza, Michael Burkard, Peter Meinke.) In addition, numerous writers visit the campus for readings and workshops. Recent visitors have included Ann Pancake, Gary Snyder, Richard Wilbur, Galway Kinnell, Maxine Kumin, Mary Oliver, and Eavan Boland, and others. An endowed chair brings a writer to the university for a semester-long residency in creative writing every four years (past participants: Dorothy Allison, Dave Madden, John Haines, David Bradley, Carolyn Forche).

The Department and the Center also sponsor the nationally circulated literary journal Zone 3 and a student literary magazine, the Red Mud Review.

Faculty and staff in the program: Barry Kitterman (fiction), Andrea Spofford (poetry and creative nonfiction), Amy Wright (creative nonfiction and poetry), and Aubrey Collins, Zone 3 managing editor.
