Porches Writing Retreat is an historic farmhouse built in 1854 overlooking the James River in the Blue Ridge foothills of Virginia.

Porches offer writers and artists uninterrupted time in a beautiful setting of spacious porches, comfortable high-ceilinged rooms, Wi-Fi, library and a well-equipped communal kitchen. Light-filled rooms with views of the river and wooded bluffs provide a quiet sanctuary in which writers can focus on their creative vision. Residents may prepare meals in the large kitchen whenever they like. This flexibility and freedom allows the writer to work unhindered, to sleep, eat, and explore the landscape in sync with their own creative rhythms. We are open year-round and holidays, available by week, partial week, or month(s). Three hours from Washington, D.C.

We also offer a one-on-one novel workshop with Greg Michalson, co-publisher of Unbridled Books, or with Nancy Zafris, novelist and series editor of the Flannery O’Connor award for short fiction. This private novel workshop is described on the Fellowship/Workshop page of our website.

Porches is now offering the Michael Kenneth Smith Novel Fellowship for women 35 and over, first novel. Winners may choose the four-day one-on-one novel workshop intensive with Greg Michalson or with Nancy Zafris (value $3,000), or a 1 to 2 week residency. Porches is also offering the Nancy Zafris Short Story Collection Fellowship at Porches. See website for fellowship information.
