The Margery Davis Boyden Wilderness Writing Residency is a unique opportunity for a writer or pair of writers seeking a lengthy spell of unparalleled solitude for creative work and refreshment in the wild. In exchange for an hour a day of routine caretaking of the property, the resident(s) receive(s) use of a remote, simple, but comfortable house in the Rogue River backcountry of southwestern Oregon and the support of a $5,000 stipend. The residency extends from April through the end of October, or longer, entrance and exit dates varying with weather conditions. The program is administered by PEN Northwest, a branch of PEN America, in cooperation with Frank and Bradley Boyden, program founders and owners of the property.
Spouse, significant other, or friend (children welcome too) may accompany the resident. Writers in any genre are welcome to apply. Extensive publication is not essential; residents are selected on the basis of writing accomplishment or promise, as evidenced in a writing sample, and suitability to the remote living situation. Writers considering this residency should honestly assess their appetite and tolerance for authentic backcountry solitude.
The residency has been filled through 2022. We expect the next application period, for the 2023 and 2024 residencies, to run from January 1, 2022 through March 15, 2022 . No applications will be accepted before January 1, 2022.
