Every summer, the Juniper Institute gathers a community of writers to explore the creative process and develop new approaches to the craft of writing. In association with the MFA Program for Poets & Writers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Juniper is an opportunity to practice living with your art at the center of your life; it is a week to imagine with wild invention as you mingle, experiment, and take chances; it is a chance to connect with writers, poets and artists from around the country who value what prose, poetry, word, image, fiction, essay, memoir and autobiography can do.
The Juniper Summer Writing Institute gathers a community of writers to explore the creative process and develop new approaches to the craft of writing. It’s one week of intensive writing workshops, craft sessions, Q&As, readings, and manuscript consultation in the beautiful Connecticut River Valley. Applications open December 1. Scholarship and general applications must be received by February 15.
New: One-Day Intensives
As part of celebrating 20 Years of Wild Invention at the Juniper Summer Writing Institute, we asked four of our alumni to each facilitate a day-long deep dive into craft and participants’ writing that emulates each alum’s own work and perspectives. Intensives will run for one day only during the Institute week, 9am–12pm and 1:30pm–4:30pm (lunch break 12pm–1:30pm). The application for One-Day Intensives will open in early spring 2024.
Independent Writing Residency
Our residency option offers writers the opportunity to attend readings, craft sessions, Q&As, community meals, open mics and writing sessions, but leaves the morning workshop time available for self-directed writing time. We’ll offer five residencies this summer. At this time we are not able to offer scholarship funding for the residencies.
