Freeing the Written Self
Join a trio of legendary poets--Kaveh Akbar, Terrance Hayes & Mary Karr--to deepen your understanding & practice of poetry and prose
A trio of legendary poets—Kaveh Akbar, Terrance Hayes, and Mary Karr—will gather in a mythic island landscape to co-lead an inspiring reading and writing Salon.
Whether you’re a poet, writer or just a passionate reader with curiosity, you will thrive in six Morning Salons, with afternoons free to roam the island (or meet together in optional writing sessions). All three poets have worked extensively in prose and are known for writing from experiences both personal and imagined. Four relaxed evenings of sunset readings and interview sessions with Akbar, Hayes, and Karr overlooking the Aegean Sea are part of this exceptional journey.
Through talks, discussions, in-class exercises (which you can try in poetry or prose) and informal workshops, travelers will discover new methods for generating pages—tricks, shortcuts, ways for freeing oneself from self-consciousness so truer words emerge. All three poets are accomplished teachers who’ve piloted writers of all ages and abilities to cultivate practices for feeling freer on the page.
Participants will better understand the making and reading of poetry—so the class is for self-described poets and people new to the form, along with prose writers and readers. Many of the great prose stylists—Joyce, Nabokov—began as poets. So if you’re working in prose, this workshop may up your prose game in terms of language, economy, voice, and the ability to stir feeling.
Meanwhile, you’ll connect with devoted readers, poets, writers and creative types from all over the planet. Past Salon participants have found the experience transformative, most have forged lifetime friendships with the wide-ranging adventurers who show up.
The poetic light and landscape of Greece--home to ancient traditions of poetry and the first recorded stories--offers the ideal setting for this Salon. As we gather on Patmos, the historic Isle of Revelation, you will have plenty of time to explore the island’s beaches, swim in the Aegean, relax at a seaside cafe, savor Greek food, and connect with kindred spirits.
So take the plunge and join our gifted poet teachers on a journey of inspired wisdom and vibrant conversation to celebrate and sharpen our understanding and practice of poetry & prose.
