Join bestselling authors George Saunders & Mary Karr for an extraordinary Salon for both readers and writers on the personal essay, memoir and short story.

This beloved Salon is back by popular demand! We’re thrilled to announce the return of two world-class writers and teaching extraordinaires to Patmos: Booker Prize-winning fiction star and MacArthur genius George Saunders (Lincoln in the Bardo, Tenth of December, Pastoralia) and bestselling memoirist and truth-telling badass Mary Karr (The Liars’ Club, Lit, and The Art of Memoir).

In our wildly successful (and sold-out) 2018 Salon, Mary & George teamed up to co-lead a reading & writing Salon that wowed a truly wonderful tribe of Salon participants.

Through conversations, in-class writing exercises, and small group workshops, George and Mary will help students crowbar open those stories they’ve longed to get down on paper, and to hone and shape a voice for long after participants leave the island. Our two acclaimed authors and gifted teachers will bring, as George Saunders says, their “decades-proven greatest hits”--writing examples and hands-on lessons in shaping pages from sprawling messes into more economic forms. Saunders and Karr have taught together at Syracuse University’s internationally known MFA program for over twenty years.
