One-week seminar in Paris, France. You will write in the mornings in small cafes, share many great meals, enjoy walks and top-notch jazz, —and time alone. Nonfiction and creative writing.

Paris Café Writing seminars are ideal for the independent traveler who wants just a little structure to corral the creative writing process.

You arrange your own transportation to Paris and pick a hotel, perhaps from our recommended list in the Marais neighborhood.

We meet in the mornings in a small cafe to discuss the art of writing, then we write.

Our focus is creative nonfiction. This means creative writing about real people, real places, and really good food! We emphasize description, place, illustration, perhaps allegory, a quote or two if it’s appropriate. We study passages from literature, explore voice, revise and polish for good leads, endings, and rhythm.

No formal writing experience is necessary.

The seminar includes seven meals together and some evening programs—a welcome dinner, a farewell dinner, an English-speaking writer reading, a spot for jazz—but there is time to write or to explore Paris on your own or with a fellow student.

There will be one free day, perhaps for your own excursion to Versailles, Chartres, or Angers. You’ll be in France, writing.

Your leader Patricia Tennison draws from her experiences as a National Louis University writing instructor, Chicago Tribune editor and writer, book author, restaurant reviewer, and part-time resident of Paris.

The seminar groups are kept small, just 6 to 8 people, so it is wise to register early.

*Note: One November session each year is reserved for returning PCW traveling writers. For first-timers, please see Sept. 26-Oct. 2, 2021; Oct. 10-16, 2021; Oct. 24-30, 2021; and Nov. 28-Dec. 4; 2021.

Also, April 24-30, 2022; May 8-14, 2022; May 22-28, 2022; and Nov. 20-26, 2022..
