Over the course of eight days, high school students at Juniper find access to the writer’s life. Through a curriculum that facilitates wild invention, participants generate new writing, experiment with style and form, access tools for finding inspiration in their day-to-day lives, and learn how to connect with an audience.

A kind of magic happens when you bring together a group of people who love to write. Juniper creates space for diverse community, where teenagers from all over the country, with vastly different life experiences, can meet and bond over a shared love for the literary arts.

Living together in close-knit “pods,” Young Writers participate in workshops, studio sessions, readings, and field trips. Many also earn academic credit while they enjoy a pre-college residential experience on the UMass campus in Amherst, an area rich with literary history.

High school students finishing grades 9, 10, and 11 are eligible. Applications open: October 1 to April 1 or until the program is filled.

Scholarship applications due: November 26

Campus housing and meals are included in the cost of tuition.

Juniper Summer Writing Institute & Institute for Young Writers

Every summer, the Juniper Institute gathers a community of writers to explore the creative process and develop new approaches to the craft of writing. Hosted by the MFA Program for Poets & Writers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Juniper is an opportunity to practice living with your art at the center of your life; it is a week to imagine with wild invention as you mingle, experiment, and take chances; it is a chance to connect with writers, poets and artists from around the country who value what prose, poetry, word, image, fiction, essay, memoir and autobiography can do.
