Take the leap to discover how you write: you won’t leave with a novel, but you will have embarked on your writing journey.
“I write to find out what I have to say.” Charles Wright
Writing can be the highest, most penetrating form of art there is—so simple, so demanding, and so transformative of the writer—and it is so completely accessible. For anyone who has read a novel or poem, been knocked out by it, and wondered, “Could I do this?” this workshop is where the answer lies.
Designed for artists and creative people of any kind—including voracious readers—who have a passion for the written word, this workshop was crafted by writer and photographer Sean Kernan to be a safe, encouraging and inspiring place to embark on your writing journey.
The week is about beginnings, starting points, and direction—discovering how you write and how to get your process working. Each day, Sean takes us though thought experiments and assignments that provoke imagination and awareness, and we write down what comes of them. Then we read and listen to ourselves, and to others, and see where our words land. Finally, we craft what we write to give it clarity and flow.
As our week together progresses, you get a real sense that you can actually write something that is alive, and a sense of direction that you can follow. At the end of our time together, you feel wider and deeper than you thought you were and you have begun to trust in your ability to what you feel.
You won’t leave with a novel, but you will leave with writing that surprises and delights you, along with new understandings of a life’s passionate journey in front of you.

In the Santa Fe Writers Lab education programs we hold values of community, craft, and the creative process in the highest regard. With our collaborative and affirming environments, a passion for writing and storytelling—and a hunger for shared experience—are the most important ingredients.
Rolf Potts, Hampton Sides, Natalie Goldberg and others renowned in the literary world, provide daily lessons on the art and craft of writing in a variety of genres and travel destinations. In quiet settings, they encourage constructive conversation and motivate you to muse and write.
Our private campus in Santa Fe has long been a sanctuary for learning and study. We share this enchanted place with a neighboring Carmelite Monastery. Dramatic views of the surrounding Jemez and Sangre de Cristo mountain ranges, warm sunshine, cool mountain air, beautiful courtyards, access to hiking trails, convenient on-campus lodging—and a private caterer to provide fresh, healthy meals—are the elements that converge to make this the perfect place in Santa Fe to find inspiration and hone your craft.
In Cuba, our home is Convento Santa Brigida, a beautifully restored convent in the heart of Old Havana. Featuring simple but comfortable accommodations, light-filled group meeting spaces, a breakfast room, a library, a chapel, and Italian nuns as our lovely hosts, this convent is a serene base to reflect and write.
Whether you are joining us in enchanting Santa Fe, or dynamic Havana, the Writers Lab provides you with a hub of creativity and community, extraordinary instructors, supportive staff, and the opportunity to take your writing to the next level.
