Writers at Work

Writers @ Work, a nationally known, independent writer’s organization, has successfully promoted and supported a creative writing community–locally, regionally, and nationally–for 34 years. While attending W@W events, writers can hone their skills and meet to discuss their work with fellow writers, agents, editors, and publishers.

W@W was founded in 1984, when Dolly Makoff, the owner of Dolly’s Bookstore in Park City, Utah, approached writer/editor James Thomas about the possibility of having a writers’ conference in Park City. Phyllis Barber and François Camoin soon joined the group, and W@W was born. Past conferences were held in Park City, Westminster College and the historic Alta Lodge in the scenic Wasatch Mountains.

W@W has enjoyed great success in its 34th year. The full, three-genre Annual Writing Competition yielded top-quality winners as well as finalists whose work is published in the current Quarterly West issue. Next June, the Writers at Work signature conference will be held June 6-10, 2018 at the Alta Lodge in the Wasatch mountains. Online registration will be available soon. Writers@Work continues its long tradition of small, intensive workshops in inspiring settings with award-winning authors.

2018's faculty includes Mat Johnson (fiction), Paisley Rekdal (poetry), and Tessa Fontaine (creative nonfiction).

The goal of Writers at Work is to continue to make a difference in the work and lives of writers, whether by giving them what they need to move on to their next draft, by connecting them to a community of writers, or by introducing them to the world of publishing. Each year W@W continues to advance its mission of helping writers at all levels of skill and experience develop as writers and succeed as authors. Through its conferences, competitions, and single day workshops W@W has seen talent brought to fruition and careers launched.
