The Writers in Residence Program is Hedgebrook’s core program, supporting the fully-funded residencies of approximately 40 women writers at the retreat each year.

Hedgebrook is one of the few writer's colonies in the world exclusively dedicated to supporting women writers, and bringing their work to the world through innovative public programs.

Located on beautiful Whidbey Island near Seattle, Hedgebrook awards 40 writers a year with two to six week residencies. Writers come from all over the world to Hedgebrook, and they are emerging and established, writing in all genres, from all walks of life. Six writers are in residence at a time, each housed in her own hand-crafted cottage. At the end of the day, residents share a home-cooked meal in the Farmhouse kitchen. The community that forms around the kitchen table is growing in the world, as Hedgebrook hosts alumnae gatherings, events and professional development workshops around the country.

Applications for the 2015 residency season will be available via our website by mid-June, with a deadline of September 3rd, 2014.

Hedgebrook

Hedgebrook is a 25-year-old retreat for women writers from around the world, whose mission is to support visionary women writers whose stories and ideas shape our culture now and for generations to come. Located on Whidbey Island, about thirty-five miles northwest of Seattle, Hedgebrook is situated on 48 acres of forest and meadow facing Puget Sound. Residents spend their days in solitude – writing, reading, taking walks in the woods on the property, on nearby Double Bluff beach or trails around the island. In the evenings, they gather in the Farmhouse kitchen to share a home-cooked gourmet meal, their work, their process and their stories.
