AWA Workshop Leadership Training: Mebane
Mebane, North Carolina, United States
The AWA Training Program teaches individuals to become strong, effective writing workshop leaders using the AWA method. This training provides instruction in leadership skills, experiential learning, ways to develop craft, & practical information on how to form successful groups for writers at all levels & from diverse backgrounds.
The workshop leadership training is a five-day intensive course focused on instructing individuals in the AWA method. It is not a writing retreat. The writing that occurs is targeted toward aspects of the method, and exercises are used to generate understanding and to experience the depths that each component of the method contains.
The ideal candidate has experience with this method through membership in an on-going workshop or through a series of retreats; Although the method’s approach is simple, its application is subtle and complex. Putting these practices into use during a workshop requires common sense, compassion and skill. Applicants are accepted based on their ability to demonstrate their prior experience with the AWA method and their potential to be an effective workshop leader.
This training prepares people to lead groups for the general population and for traditionally silenced people in places such as public housing, shelters, hospitals or prisons.
Once trained, each Affiliate is independent in establishing, leading and setting costs for her or his own workshops, retreats and events. An AWA Affiliate is not an employee of AWA, but an independent business owner or social agent. AWA maintains the quality of affiliate workshops through the Affiliate Program. In this way, affiliates can express their own creativity and interests while staying true to the principles of the AWA method.

AWA is an international community of writing workshop leaders committed to the belief that a writer is someone who writes and that every writer has a unique voice. AWA trains writers to become workshop leaders so that they affirm that commitment in every AWA workshop, with novice writers who have been led to believe they have no voice and with experienced writers who want to hone their craft.
