Position

The Membership Assistant helps support AWP’s membership and mission while representing AWP in a way that is professional, effective, and caring.

This is a full-time, remote position, with travel required one week per year. The Membership Assistant reports directly to the Director of Membership Services and works in close collaboration with everyone on the Membership Team. 

Key Responsibilities:

Administrative and Strategic

  • Answers daily requests for information by phone (voicemail) and email
  • Monitors the awp@awpwriter.org inbox, answers questions, routes more specific requests to the appropriate individual(s) and/or department(s), and follows up to ensure all concerns are adequately and promptly addressed
  • Assists in developing and maintaining a membership FAQ page
  • Enters member information for individuals who purchase memberships and subscriptions
  • Updates contact information and administrative privileges for institutions and WC&C programs
  • Assists with annual program invoicing
  • Regularly pulls various back-end reports and assists with data cleanup
  • Ensures all relevant files are regularly copied onto AWP’s shared file system
  • Confirms membership program web deadlines and Submittable forms are up-to-date

Collaboration

  • Helps with development of new processes and projects to improve member services
  • Provides feedback on new and ongoing membership projects
  • Assists the Director of Membership with compiling and editing reports for board meetings, Professional Standards Committee, and Director’s Plenary Assembly
  • Sends out content requests to AWP staff for biweekly newsletter and follows up
  • Assists onsite at the weeklong annual conference

Projects and Marketing

  • Conducts industry research and provides updates to AWP’s Guide to Writing Programs
  • Assists with annual surveys and data collection

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • Work involves potential pressures generated by volume of work, frequent interruptions, seasonal work periods, and irregular hours to meet deadlines and achieve objectives
  • Work includes speaking, listening, reading, extended periods of computer operation, possibly sitting for long periods, and some travel.

AWP provides support, advocacy, resources, and community for nearly 50,000 writers, 550 college and university creative writing programs, and 150 writers’ conferences and centers. As a national professional association of creative writers and writing programs, AWP brings together independent writers, academic writing programs, journals, presses, and arts organizations, united by a love for the literary arts.
