Hilary Mantel, Novelist, 1952-2022

British award-winning novelist Dame Hilary Mantel passed away at age seventy last week on Thursday, September 22, 2022. Mantel was a worldwide best-selling author and a two-time winner of the Booker Prize for her novel Wolf Hall and its sequel Bring Up the Bodies. Revered for her stunning psychological characterization and captivating prose, Mantel solidified her space in the writing world by bringing to life historical figures such as Thomas Cromwell and Henry VIII. She penned over a dozen novels, her most famous trilogy translated into forty-one different languages. Mantel persevered through chronic illness for most of her life, becoming a vocal advocate for women’s health. Mantel is survived by her husband, Gerald McEwen. AWP joins the literary community in mourning her loss.
