University of Georgia Press Establishes Bruce and Georgia McEver Fund

May 14, 2015

The University of Georgia Press has announced its development of the Bruce and Georgia McEver Fund for the Arts and Environment, according to a recent statement. The fund will support the publication of texts covering poetry, environmental planning, historical preservation, and other subjects.

In addition, in partnership with the University of Georgia, Georgia State, and Georgia Tech, the new fund will also support the Georgia Poetry Prize, whose annual contest will be formally announced later this year. The first prize-winning collection will be published in 2016.

Bruce McEver, founder and chairman of Berkshire Capital Securities LLC and member of the University of Georgia’s Advisory Council, gifted the press in honor of his late wife. “Georgia McEver was my wife, an artist, an opera singer, and an inspiration herself,” McEver said. “Her death motivated my first book of poems. By establishing this fund and related poetry prize, I hope to inspire other poets to produce their first published work.”

McEver is on the Board of Directors for Poets House (New York, NY), and is a member of the Dean’s Council at the Harvard Divinity School and the Candler School at Emory. He has published three books of poetry, and is a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he co-founded the Poetry at Tech program.

“Bruce McEver has made a substantial contribution to the success of the University of Georgia Press,” said Craig Barrow III, chair of the Press’s advisory council. “His gift will sustain the publication of excellent scholarship and poetry for years to come.”
