San Antonio International Airport Unveils Digital Public Library

Digital Public Library KioskDid you forget to bring a book on your trip? At San Antonio International Airport in San Antonio, Texas, you can now download up to three books from the airport’s two digital library kiosks onto your mobile device—for free.

San Antonio Public Library (SAPL) funded the kiosks, which allow patrons to browse the library’s content and then check out materials for three weeks before expiring. The kiosks, 55-inch interactive screens, offer videos and audio content in addition to books, and serve as rapid recharging stations for mobile devices.

The kiosks require that patrons have a SAPL library card, but according to a statement released by SAPL on Monday, a temporary 24-hour library card for airport visitors from out of town will soon be released.

As the first of their kind, the kiosks come a year after San Antonio made headlines with BiblioTech, one of the first all-digital libraries. The Digital Public Library of America, founded in 2012, also offers publically accessible material collected from multiple libraries, archives, and museums on its website, including the Library of Congress, HathiTrust, and the Internet Archive.
