Wallace Stevens’s Connecticut Home

The Hartford, CT, home of modernist poet (and insurance executive) Wallace Stevens, winner of the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, is now on the market with an asking price of $489,900. The home is currently owned by Christ Church Cathedral in Hartford. Since the property was listed on the market (June 22nd, a “Sunday Morning” of course), there’ve been numerous showings, with surely more to come. The Hartford Courant newspaper described the 3,900-square-foot home with six bedrooms as “a bit of a fixer-upper, with updates needed in the kitchen and bathrooms. None of the furniture that remains is vintage Stevens, but a biography of his life has been casually placed on an enclosed cast-iron radiator in a first-floor sitting room.” The Courant claims the neighborhood is “one of the city’s most exclusive.”

Stevens, who died in 1955, purchased the home in 1932. Though he widely received praise in the ‘30s, he did not draw celebrity attention in his neighborhood, through which he walked from his house every day to his job at the Hartford Accident and Indemnity Co. (now known as The Hartford).

For more than thirteen ways of looking at the Stevens home, hop over to The Hartford Courant. And stop by the Poetry Foundation for some of his most beloved poems. Actor Bill Murray read a few of his poems (including “A Rabbit as King of the Ghosts”) at a Poets House event in Brooklyn.
