The BFA in Creative & Professional Writing allows students to "write for the love of it, write for a living." Creative writing workshops are offered in fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction and scriptwriting (for stage). Professional writing workshops are offered in electronic writing (weblogs and wikis, electronic rhetoric, web content writing), technical writing and freelance writing.

THE PROGRAM: The BFA program includes 21 credits of writing workshops, 21 credits of literature and 15 credits in a secondary concentration (additional literature or writing classes, or a minor in another discipline). The 3-credit BFA Senior Project is a portfolio of the students work and is intended to prepare a manuscript for submission for publication or for graduate school applications.

The BFA may be taken with the BS in English, Teacher Licensure. The Field of Emphasis in Writing (equivalent to a minor) may be taken with any major in any discipline. The department also offers a BA in English, a minor in literature, a minor and certificate in electronic writing.

SCHOLARSHIPS: The English Department at Bemidji State offers seven student tuition scholarships, including the William D. Elliott Award in Creative Writing.

STUDENTS ACCEPTED IN MFA PROGRAMS: Bemidji State BFA writing majors have been accepted in many MFA writing programs, including the following: University of Iowa Writer's Workshop; Bowling Green State University, Ohio; Ruttger's University; Notre Dame University; Emerson College, Boston; Hamline University, St. Paul; Minnesota State University-Moorhead, Minnesota State University-Mankato. English majors have also been accepted at Purdue University and Kennesaw State University, Georgia.

INTERNSHIPS: BFA majors have held internships at 1st Hold Magazine, Milkweed Editions Press, the Minnesota Historical Society Press, Copper Canyon Press, Banta Printing, the Ceridian Corporation, the United Way, Bemidji, and the Region 2 Arts Council, Bemidji.

EDITORIAL BOARD EXPERIENCE: Perhaps unique to the BFA at Bemidji State is the opportunity for students to serve on editorial boards for four anthologies. Dust & Fire: Writing and Art by Women and New Voices: Fiction & Poetry by Minnesota High School Students are edited in a class, Internship in Literary Publishing. Rivers Meeting: Writing & Art by Bemidji State Students and Fire Ring Voices: Writing & Art by Men are published by student clubs.
