Beloit College

Wisconsin, United States

Residential program

For nearly 50 years Beloit College has been a leader among undergraduate institutions in the study of creative writing. Our Creative Writing major requires introductory and advanced work in at least two writing genres, chosen from among fiction, poetry, playwriting, and creative nonfiction. A minor course of study in journalism is also available. Class size in all writing workshops is limited to 15 students to ensure individualized instruction. In addition, students may apprentice themselves to instructors for one-on-one Special Projects courses. Credit internships with professional publishing groups are also available for students wishing to gain practical experience in writing or editing.

Among the opportunities available is the Beloit Fiction Journal, a national literary magazine with an editorial board comprised of Beloit College undergraduates. Student writers may compete for a number of annual awards, including the $1,000 Lois Wilson Mackey Prize in Creative Writing and the $1,000 Nick Adams Short Fiction Contest. Occasionally, overseas writing seminars are offered in Glasgow, Scotland.
