Low-residency program

The low-residency MFA in Creative Writing program of Antioch University Los Angeles is devoted not merely to the education of literary artists but to community engagement and the pursuit of social justice. Rather than focusing exclusively on the completion of a single book-length final manuscript, the MFA program educates students in the various roles of the writer in society, how to make a difference on the page and in the diverse communities where writers work and live.

AULA has distinguished itself from other MFA programs through our award-winning faculty in fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, literary translation, and writing for young people, as well as through innovative features such as the MFA field study, the Art of Translation residency seminar and online conference, and LUNCH TICKET, our online literary journal. The program is also remarkable for its successful publishing, award-winning graduates.

During the program, students also have the opportunity to spend one semester working with students and faculty in the Master of Fine Arts in Writing and Contemporary Media program offered at our sister institution, Antioch University Santa Barbara, which offers screenwriting, writing for television, playwriting, writing for the internet, mixed or multimedia storytelling, podcasting, and other emerging contemporary genres.
