Residential program

American University offers the MFA degree in Creative Writing. Aside from regularly offered courses and workshops of a semester's duration, the program offers a Visiting Writers Series with 8-10 events throughout the Academic Year.

In addition to the permanent faculty, the Literature Department is sometimes joined by one or two Distinguished Writers-in-Residence, who teach in the MFA program. Recent holders of the Residency have included Mary Kay Zurvaleff and Andrew Holleran.

Graduate writing students produce a literary magazine, Folio; newsletter, In Capital Letters; and a bi-annual alumni newsletter, The Messenger. They also have the opportunity to participate in various on and off-campus readings throughout the year. A limited number of fellowships and assistantships are available.
