AWP celebrates the writers who teach in non-traditional settings and lift up the voices and stories of those in their communities.
Writers are leading workshops—often volunteering their time—in prisons, elder care facilities, with veterans, in hospitals, and with at-risk youth. Many take part in Writers in the Schools programs across the country each year.
We have gathered information and stories about these transformative programs should you wish to become involved. In the directory below, you will find each program’s location and information on how you can contribute time, space, or other resources. If a group does not exist in your area, you will soon be able to see recommendations for starting a program on your own based on best practices compiled by those who are doing this important work today.
We are currently building a searchable directory of programs. In the meantime, we welcome other programs that wish to be featured here. Simply contact Diane Zinna for more information.
