AWP celebrates the writers who teach in non-traditional settings and lift up the voices and stories of those in their communities.
Writers are leading workshops—often volunteering their time—in prisons, elder care facilities, with veterans, in hospitals, and with at-risk youth. Many take part in Writers in the Schools programs across the country each year.
When we started gathering information for this project, we thought we at least knew the basic “categories” of where such service work was happening, but we were soon shown otherwise. Simply hearing where these programs are taking place was exhilarating, and we knew it would be to AWP’s members, as well.
We are currently building a searchable directory of programs. In the meantime, we welcome other programs that wish to be featured here. Simply contact Diane Zinna for more information.
