Roger Greenwald

Grew up in New York, attended The City College, the St. Marks-in-the-Bouwerie Poetry Project workshop, and New York University, then the University of Toronto. In 1970 founded the international literary annual WRIT Magazine; edited it until 1995. Published first book of poems, Connecting Flight, in 1993. In 1994 won the CBC Radio/Saturday Night Literary Award for poetry (Canadian Broadcasting Corp.), and in 2003 a second CBC Literary Award, for travel literature. Taught creative writing, literary translation, and prose style at Innis College in the University of Toronto. Published translations include A Story about Mr. Silberstein, a novel by Erland Josephson; Through Naked Branches: Selected Poems of Tarjei Vesaas, a finalist for the PEN Award for Poetry in Translation (PEN American Center); North in the World: Selected Poems of Rolf Jacobsen, winner of the Lewis Galantière Award (American Translators Association); Picture World, by Niels Frank; Meditations on Georges de La Tour, by Paal-Helge Haugen; and Guarding the Air: Selected Poems of Gunnar Harding.
